Sega Dreamcast easy 15 minutes

Connecting the Sega Dreamcast to a modern TV

The Sega Dreamcast supports multiple video output options: composite, S-Video, VGA and (via an adapter) HDMI. VGA gives the best image — progressive and sharp — and is the recommended option if your monitor or TV has a VGA input.

What you need {#what-you-need}

Option A — VGA (best quality, if your monitor/TV supports it)

Option B — HDMI adapter (easiest)

Option C — Composite (works everywhere, lowest quality)

Why VGA?

The Dreamcast is one of the few consoles of its generation that supports a progressive VGA signal. The result is a sharp, flicker-free image that looks surprisingly good on a modern monitor. Not all games support VGA — but most do.

Connecting via VGA

  1. Connect the VGA Box or VGA cable to the AV output of the Dreamcast
  2. Connect the VGA connector to your monitor or TV
  3. Also connect the audio cables (VGA carries no audio)
  4. Turn on the Dreamcast — most games start directly in VGA mode

No VGA input on your TV? Use a VGA-to-HDMI adapter (note: you’ll also need a separate audio input on the adapter, or use the composite audio cables).

Connecting via HDMI adapter

  1. Connect the HDMI adapter to the AV output of the Dreamcast
  2. Connect an HDMI cable to your TV
  3. Select the correct HDMI input and turn on the Dreamcast

Connecting via composite

  1. Connect the composite cable (yellow/white/red cinch) to the AV output
  2. Connect to the composite input on your TV
  3. Select the AV input on your TV

Note: not all games support VGA

Some Dreamcast games (particularly those using interlaced video) don't work via VGA. In that case you'll see a black screen or an error message. Connect a composite or S-Video cable as an alternative in those situations. A VGA Box with a switch makes this easier to manage.

Done

Via VGA or a good HDMI adapter the Dreamcast looks impressive on a modern monitor. Many people are surprised how sharp the image is compared to composite.
