Set up a Mega Everdrive on the Sega Mega Drive
The Mega Drive has a large library — but due to region locking, PAL owners miss out on a significant chunk of the Japanese and American titles. A Mega Everdrive fixes that. One cartridge, SD card in, full library available.
What you need {#what-you-need}
- Mega Everdrive (v2 or X7) or a clone variant
- SD or MicroSD card — minimum 4GB, formatted as FAT32
- Game ROM files in .bin, .gen or .md format
The Mega Everdrive X7 also supports Sega CD expansions and Master System ROMs (with the right settings). The cheaper v2 does great work for the standard Mega Drive library.
Step by step
1. Format the SD card
Format as FAT32. On Windows: right-click → Format → FAT32.
2. Download the firmware
Download the latest firmware for your Everdrive version from the Krikzz website.
3. Copy firmware to SD
Copy the firmware files to the root of the SD card.
4. Put your games on the SD card
Create a MEGA folder (or the folder the firmware expects) and copy your ROM files into it.
5. Insert the Everdrive in the Mega Drive
Slide the SD card into the Everdrive. Insert the cartridge into the Mega Drive slot.
6. Start up
The Mega Drive starts with the Everdrive menu. Choose a game with the controller and press Start.
Master System games
With the Mega Everdrive X7 you can also load Sega Master System ROMs. Activate this via the settings menu — the Mega Drive then emulates the Master System hardware.
