Installing an IPS screen in the original Game Boy

The original Game Boy has a greenish LCD screen without a backlight — hard to read and far from what we’re used to today. An IPS replacement is the most popular mod for the DMG (the original grey model) and completely transforms the playing experience.

Watch out: DMG vs GBC vs GBA

There are IPS kits for different Game Boy models. Make sure you buy a kit specifically made for the original Game Boy (DMG-001). Kits for the GBC or GBA won't fit.

Step 1 — Open the housing

  1. Remove the four AA batteries
  2. Remove the 6 tri-wing screws on the back (including one under the battery cover)
  3. Separate front and back halves carefully using a spudger
  4. Set the circuit board aside (ribbon cables may still be attached)

Step 2 — Remove the original screen

  1. Remove the screen frame (held by clips or screws, depending on the revision)
  2. Carefully lift the original LCD screen free
  3. Disconnect the ribbon cable — note the locking tab

Step 3 — Install the IPS screen

  1. Connect the IPS ribbon cable to the connector on the circuit board
  2. Lock the connector carefully
  3. Place the IPS screen in the housing — check it sits correctly
  4. Test before closing: temporarily connect the batteries and power on

Tip: hidden brightness setting

Many DMG IPS kits have a hidden menu for brightness and colour temperature, accessible via a button combination (e.g. Select + A or Up). See the instructions that came with your specific kit for the exact combination.

Step 4 — Close the housing

  1. Place the circuit board back
  2. Press front and back halves together
  3. Tighten all screws
  4. Put the batteries back

Done

The original Game Boy with an IPS screen is a completely different experience. Bright, sharp and readable in any lighting — one of the most rewarding mods in retro gaming.
