Install an IPS screen in the Game Boy Advance
The original GBA screen has no backlight. That was a deliberate choice in 2001 (battery life), but in 2026 it’s just a pain. Unreadable in sunlight. Indoors you hold your thumb alongside the screen to catch some light.
An IPS screen fixes this completely. Bright, sharp, visible in any environment. This is the most transformative mod you can do to a GBA.
What you need {#what-you-need}
- IPS screen kit for GBA — search for “GBA IPS screen kit V2” or “GBA IPS LCD kit”; several brands available
- Tri-wing screwdriver — for the Nintendo screws
- Phillips screwdriver (PH1) — for the regular screws
- Spudger or plectrum — for opening the housing
- Isopropyl alcohol + lint-free cloth — to keep the screen dust-free
Multiple IPS kits are available. V2 kits fit slightly better than V1. Some kits require trimming a small piece of housing — read the product description carefully. You want a kit specifically designed for the GBA AGB-001 (not the SP).
Step by step
1. Open the GBA
On the back there are seven screws: three are tri-wing (Y-shaped) and four are Phillips. Remove all screws and lay them out in order.
Carefully lift off the back of the housing.
2. Remove the motherboard
Disconnect the ribbon cable of the original screen from the connector on the motherboard. Note: don’t pull the cable itself — first unlock the tab on the connector.
3. Remove the original screen
The original LCD panel sits in the front part of the housing. There’s sometimes a piece of tape or foam around it. Remove this and lift out the panel.
4. Prepare the housing
Some IPS kits require cutting or filing away a small plastic tab in the opening. Check whether your kit requires this — it’ll say in the included instructions.
5. Install the IPS panel
Place the IPS panel in position. Note the orientation of the ribbon cable.
Clean the screen and the housing opening with isopropyl alcohol before closing everything up. Dust flecks under the screen are visible forever afterwards — take a moment for this step.
6. Connect the ribbon cable
Connect the ribbon cable of the IPS screen to the connector on the motherboard. Lock the connector.
7. Test before closing
Replace the motherboard and temporarily connect the batteries. Turn the GBA on and check that the screen works and is evenly lit.
8. Close the housing
If everything works: screws back in, done.
Adjusting brightness
With most IPS kits you can adjust brightness via a button combination. How that works varies by kit — it’ll be in the included instructions or on the product page.
