JJ says
What is the Nintendo GameCube?
The Nintendo GameCube is a home console by Nintendo, released in September 2001 in Japan and May 2002 in Europe. With its compact cubic form, mini-DVD discs and purple (or black) shell, the GameCube is unmistakeable. Worldwide, 21.7 million units were sold — a commercial disappointment at the time, but today a beloved cult console.
The library is exceptionally strong: Super Mario Sunshine, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Pikmin all rank among Nintendo’s finest games. And thanks to the GC Loader mod, the full library is accessible without having to hunt down every disc.
GameCube editions
| Edition | Model | Notes | Recommended for |
|---|---|---|---|
| GameCube (purple/black/silver) | DOL-001 | Digital AV output present | Most people ✅ |
| GameCube (late model) | DOL-101 | Digital AV output removed | Budget option |
Recommendation: Go for the DOL-001 model. Identifiable by the digital AV output on the back (an extra square connector next to the analogue AV output). That port is needed for the best HDMI adapters.
Getting started {#getting-started}
Here’s what you need to play today:
- Video cable — Component cable for the best analogue quality, or an HDMI adapter for digital
- Controller — The original GameCube controller is still the best for Smash Bros. to this day
- Games — Original GameCube discs or a GC Loader for SD card use
Tip: DOL-001 for the best image quality
The digital AV output of the DOL-001 model gives the sharpest picture via an HDMI adapter. The GC Digital, Carby or EON GCHD are popular options. Does not work on the DOL-101.

Most popular games
Super Mario Sunshine
Mario with a water cannon on a tropical island. Quirky, sunny and delightful.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Cel-shading, ocean and adventure. One of the most beautiful Zeldas ever made.
Metroid Prime
First-person exploration at its best. Atmospheric, complex and immersive.
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Still one of the most played fighting games in the competitive scene.
Pikmin
Cute, strategic and with an urgency that pulls you in. Original and unique.
Luigi's Mansion
Luigi rescues Mario in a haunted house. More atmospheric than it sounds.
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
Two riders per kart. The most chaotic and fun Mario Kart to that point.
Where to find games
Physical
- Second-hand markets — Large selection, reasonable prices
- A trusted retailer like Amazon — Reliable but pricey for rare titles
- A specialist retro game shop — Best place for a good selection
Watch out: GameCube discs have gotten expensive
Due to the GameCube's popularity, some titles have become expensive on the second-hand market. Rare games like Metroid Prime Trilogy or Chibi-Robo can cost hundreds. A GC Loader makes the full library affordably accessible.
Digital: GC Loader
The GC Loader replaces the optical drive with an SD card reader. You copy games as .iso files and select them via Swiss, the homebrew launcher. See the GC Loader guide.
Common problems & fixes
- Discs not reading → Laser is worn or dirty. Clean or replace — or consider a GC Loader
- No picture → Check the AV cable; the DOL-001 also has a digital output for better adapters
- Controller not responding → Check the port; GameCube controller ports wear over time
Mods & improvements
- Install GC Loader — Replaces the optical drive completely. Stable, fast and future-proof. See the GC Loader guide
- HDMI adapter — Carby, GC Digital or EON GCHD for crystal-clear digital picture via the digital AV output
- Game Boy Player — Play Game Boy, GBC and GBA games on your TV via the bottom of the GameCube
Homebrew
Via Swiss (a homebrew loader) and the GC Loader or an SD card adapter you can run homebrew software and emulators on the GameCube. The community is active and there are regular new releases. Swiss also works as a diagnostic tool and gives access to various GameCube settings.
