JJ says

What is the Nintendo GameCube?

The Nintendo GameCube is a home console by Nintendo, released in 2001. With 21.7 million units sold it was commercially Nintendo’s least successful home console up to that point — but that says nothing about the quality of the games or the loyalty of the fanbase.

The GameCube is home to Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, Pikmin, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Resident Evil 4 — all games that rose above their generation. The console has no DVD player and uses its own mini-DVD discs, which seemed strange at the time but actually put less strain on the drive than the PS2.

Today the GameCube is a beloved collector’s piece, and the GC Loader mod (which replaces the optical drive with an SD card reader) is one of the most talked-about retro mods of recent years.

Advice: The standard indigo or black GameCube works great. When buying, check the condition of the disc tray and the Digital Output port on the bottom — that port is valuable for HDMI mods.

Here’s what you need to play today:

Tip

Got a GameCube with the Digital Output port on the bottom (DOL-001)? Then you can use a GCVideo adapter or Carby for HD output via HDMI. The best picture you can get from a GameCube without modding the console itself.

Where to find games?

Physical

Watch out: mini-DVD discs

GameCube games come on proprietary mini-DVD discs (8 cm). These are more fragile than regular discs — the smaller size makes scratches more quickly fatal to readability. Always check the condition before buying, or consider a GC Loader mod to bypass the optical drive entirely.

Digital: GC Loader

The GC Loader replaces the optical drive with an SD card reader. This lets you play the full library from an SD card — no drive wear, no problems with damaged discs.

Homebrew

The GameCube has an active homebrew scene. Via the Homebrew Channel (installed via SD2SP2 or a hacked save game) you can run emulators, media players and homebrew games. The GC Loader makes this even easier.

Underestimated but unforgettable. The GameCube deserves a second chance — or a third, or a fourth.
