What is the Atari 2600?

The Atari 2600 (originally the Atari VCS) is a home console by Atari, released in 1977. It was the first console to use cartridges as a medium — a revolutionary idea that let you expand a single device endlessly with new games. With over 30 million units sold, it was the dominant home console of the late seventies and early eighties.

In 2026, the Atari 2600 is a fascinating piece of computing history. The games are simple but addictive, the joystick is iconic and the hardware — if well preserved — still works. The main practical problem: the RF connection doesn’t work on modern TVs. But that’s solvable.

In 2023, Atari also released the Atari 2600+: a modern re-release that’s compatible with original cartridges and connects directly via HDMI.

Recommendation: If you want to enjoy the library without fussing with video adapters, the Atari 2600+ is the simplest choice. For the authentic retro experience, go for the original — and add a composite mod.

Getting started {#getting-started}

Here’s what you need to play today:

Tip: RF or composite?

The original Atari 2600 outputs video via an RF connection that fits the antenna port of older TVs. Modern TVs no longer have that port. The solution: a composite video mod (requires soldering) or an RF-to-composite adapter. See our connection guide.

Where to find games

Physical

Tip: cartridges almost never break

Atari cartridges are exceptionally robust. They contain no battery (no SRAM saves) and last practically indefinitely. A loose contact is easily cleaned with a cotton swab and IPA.

Digital

The Atari 2600 doesn’t have a flashcart ecosystem like newer consoles, but homebrew cartridges are available through specialist webshops. The Harmony Cartridge is the most popular option for running ROMs from an SD card.

Mods & improvements

Homebrew

The Atari 2600 has a surprisingly active homebrew community. New games are still being developed — several new titles were released in 2024. The Harmony Cartridge loads ROMs from an SD card and is compatible with almost all homebrew releases.
